EVENT BLOG: Christmas parties versus cash bonuses: the power of incentives?

Even poor old Premiership footballers need a glass of fizz, a sausage roll and a day off

It’s nice to know that even Premiership footballers need incentivising. Clearly thousands of pounds every week is not enough to keep boss and employee working in perfect harmony if this week’s headlines are to be believed.

Stoke City Football Club is to hold an internal meeting following reports that manager Tony Pulis and star striker James Beattie had to be separated by staff and players at the weekend after a bust-up that allegedly had the team’s Christmas party at its centre.

The story goes that the team were to have a day off to enjoy/recover from said party, only for Pulis to cancel the vacation and call them in for training after a 2-0 defeat by Arsenal on Saturday. And then, as Harry Hill would say, ‘FIGHT’.

Elsewhere in incentive controversy news, MPs have decried the £300,000 in Christmas bonuses for UK Border Agency staff this year, claiming that the body is still badly under-performing.

What does all this tell us? Well, even poor old millionaires need a glass of fizz, a sausage roll and a day off. Perhaps less controversial than cash handouts in a world where perception, perception, perception still clearly rules.
